Oedipus the King



I have recently read Oedipus the King for the second time. The first time I read it was in a history class and we only briefly read certain parts. I did not realize what a good story it was. After reading it for this class, I learned a lot more and can honestly say I have more appreciation for the story. The main parts that I enjoyed were the Sphinx’s riddle, understanding where the ‘Oedipus Complex’ originated, and seeing how the oracles are true.
Oedipus was the King of Thebes, and was married to Jocasta who he did not realize was his mother. Oedipus even fathered Jocasta’s children. Oedipus came to Thebes and was greeted by a monster called the Sphinx. The Sphinx was killing anyone who could not answer her riddle. Oedipus successfully answered her riddle and freed the city of the horrible torture of the Sphinx. Thebes recognized Oedipus for freeing the city of the Sphinx by declaring him ...
