Schism is a separation or division into factions within the Church for doctrinal or other causes. In the year of 1054, the Catholic Church went through an extended period of turmoil and crises. Corruption was widespread as the Church’s power was weakening. The Church also no longer had a strong foundation to maintain authority and the papacy jumped back and forth through its decision of unresolved differences of belief. This eventually led to a great separation of Christianity from the East and the West, which as of today has still not been resolved. The following report is a general observation of the cause of the Great Schism and a variety of methods in resolving this extensive dispute.
