My Philosophy of Ethics in Education

Ethical behavior is learned behavior. It is the discipline of dealing with what is good or bad and with moral duty and obligation. Over the years we have taught our children to be individuals to stand on their own, not to succumb to peer pressure, and in the process, not to worry about anything but themselves. They learned the lesson well. Individualism is being encouraged and even celebrated. Now I see in the middle school today students saying that they themselves determine standards of right and wrong. Students resist the notion that they owe anything to anyone, or that they have any obligation toward society. They recognize that wrongs can be done, but have a very difficult time judging their own actions to be wrong. I think youths today feel they can truly be wrong because they are the final judges of what is right and wrong for them.
According to Emmanuel Kant, the Law which everyone is to follow is based on the Golden Rule. ”Do unto others as you would have them...
