Essay Throughout the story, Athol Fugard manipulates our expectations to keep the readers interest in the story. When I first began the story, I perceived the ending to be full of happiness and joy since the first scene portrayed friendly competition between Thami and Isabel. However, the story takes a drastic change when the author goes into further depth with the characters. Fugard tells us about each of the characters through monologues throughout the whole novel. It is there where we truly discover the each persons character.
