On April 7th, scientists of Sandia National Laboratories stated that they had discovered thermonuclear fusion, a beginning to the possibility of a new energy source, fusion power. These scientists detonated a tiny hydrogen bomb, the essence of thermonuclear fusion. These controlled explosions are small, yet could be a method of generating electricity by using the process that powers the sun, fusion. Combining hydrogen atoms into helium, fusion produces abundant energy as a byproduct. Fusion power would be much safer than fission, which is the method currently used in nuclear power plants. Fusion does not produce radioactive waste.
