Lord of The Flies- Ralph's Transformation

Lord of the Flies follows the metamorphosis of a group of young boys learning to live and survive on a deserted island. The main character, Ralph, deals with many circumstances that are out of his control. Golding’s Lord of the Flies, allows the reader to observe Ralph’s transformation from childhood to adulthood.

Ralph emerges as the first character the reader meets. Golding describes him as “the fair boy”. (7) This description indicates a perfect, well-liked child with much innocence. Ralph’s child like innocence is further implied when he says his dad is “ a commander in the Navy… When he gets leave he’ll come and rescue us.” (13) This calls attention to Ralph’s inability to view matters realistically and shows his simplistic, puerile thinking. Though deserted and left to survive on his own, Ralph views the character, Piggy, as a fat bore with “Ass-mar and matter-of fact ideas” ( ) insinuating the surroundings of a playground rather than a des...
