Literary Period of To Kill A Mockingbird

The 1950s were a time of tremendous change in America. The government had much to do with this period. Senator Joseph McCarthy was very important to the 1950s. Joseph was party of the Republican Party and he was a heavy drinker. McCarthy was completely anti-communist. He was very popular with the press. He felt as if communist equaled disloyalty. If he felt as if a person was favoring the communists, he would give them a court subpoena. His actions were known as the Red Scare.
Many significant court cases took place during this time as well. In 1892 in Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court decided that there would be separate but equal places and rules for African-Americans and Caucasians. In 1954 in Brown v. Board of Education, the courts decided that separate but equal was not entirely equal. This was a very important court case to the African-American community.
