Life

Have you ever visited a place that was perfectly pleasant, but you would not want to live there? Louise Glück sarcastically describes one of these places in her poem, “Life Is a Nice Place.” The place the speaker of the poem is describing is Life, or the everyday world we live in.
Who is the speaker of the poem? When I read this poem it reminds me of a smart aleck kid. I can picture the kid saying in the usual teenager tone, “Life and Earth is beautiful and a paradise, but if we don’t care for it to keep it that way, I wouldn’t want to live here.” I think Glück intended this, because she is known for her angry poems. This poem is telling people we better stop harming our “Life” or else we will not have it anymore.
