Hungry Little Caterpillar

I can almost remember it as if it were yesterday that I was twelve years old and at the Virginia State Fair. It was a comfortable and clear evening, and yet it felt as if my family and I had been plucked from reality and placed on a movie soundstage. The sweet smell of cotton candy, stale popcorn, and the distinct stench of animal feces wafted through the air. The pathways bustled with people scurrying from one attraction to another.
We spent the most of the evening gallivanting around the midway experiencing all the complimentary rides that we could indulge our senses in. While my sisters and I soaked up every bit of our childhood pleasures that we could while whizzing, twirling, spinning, and whirling, my parents stood off to the side and cherished this moment for they knew that it wouldn’t last forever.
