The Violations of Humans
The play Death and the Maiden, written by Ariel Dorfman is set in the country of Chile in a time where the deep scars of a tyrannical dictatorship were only beginning to heal. For seventeen years, Chile endured the "iron-fisted" rule of former army commander in chief, general Augusto Pinochet. Under Pinochet's regime many crimes were committed against the Chilean people such as rape, starvation, torture, and murder. The author of this play, Ariel Dorfman saw all of these horrific acts first hand, and has made most of his career out of writing about the horrors of tyranny and, in later works, the trials of exile in Chile. A central theme in this play is abuse of human rights that went on while Paulina was held as a political prisoner. Human rights are defined as the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled, often held to include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression, and equality before the law.
