How persuasive is Northrop Frye’s statement that Canada “is practically the only country left in the world which is pure colony, colonial in psychology as well as in mercantile economics”?



Northrop Frye’s statement seems to be suggesting that Canada still exists as merely a colonial state as opposed to a fully formed nation with it’s own unique range of identities. If Canada has developed a national conscious considerably different to its colonial roots it could be ascertained that the country is no longer colonial.
There has always been an unease about Canadian national identity and it could be suggested that this is what defines Canada the best.
