The novel ”Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy’ written by Douglas Adams,
is a travel guide that satirises the traditional travel and exploration
text genre. It achieves this by use of a variety of language and
structural techniques, all of which ”send up’ the elements of normal
travel texts.
Hyperboles in contrast with gross understatement are common throughout
the novel. Adams has taken certain types of information found in other
travel texts and over-emphasised them to a higher degree. Travel guides
usually contain useful and relevant information about the places they
explore. This can be seen in the ”new age’ travel guide, the ”Lonely
Planet Guide to Morocco’. This travel text provides types of
information about ”where to go’, Morocco–s ”dangers and annoyances’ as
well as certain ”hints and tips’ travellers would find useful along the
way.
