Hills Like White Elephants

The choice between right and wrong is a decision we have all been making since the beginning of time. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden had to choose whether they would obey God, or give in to their desires and eat of the forbidden fruit. Children must decide whether to share their candy with playmates, or eat all of it themselves. Teenagers have to decide whether to break curfew, or leave the party early. Adults have to choose between the better paying job, and the job that would be more beneficial to all involved. Decisions between right and wrong are all over. We cannot escape them. However, what does one do when the decision is not clear-cut? What does one do when the gray area is so big, they can’t see outside of it? This is a struggle that mankind has had to deal with since the beginning of time, and we cannot escape from it. Hemingway uses fly-on-the-wall point of view in “Hills Like White Elephants,” purposely leaving things ambiguous to the reader so that the reality of...
