The Great Irish Migration




The Great Famine of Ireland started in 1846 and lasted until 1850. The cause of the

famine was potato crops, which were Ireland’s largest growing crops. The price of food

rose because of the failing crops. The farmers couldn’t pay their rent and taxes because

of the rotting crops. Peasants ate the rotten potatoes and became sick. Soon large

villages were sick with cholera and typhus. Priests tried to help starving but they could
