The setting and weather in Ethan Frome mostly shape to the emotional impact of the story. If Starkfield had a different climate, then the mood would be greatly changed. Edith Wharton uses the Starkfield setting and weather for isolation, emotional feelings, and physical appearance to contribute to the tone and theme of Ethan Frome. Ethan Frome's isolation from others is a result of the setting and weather of Starkfield. Old Ethan is a cold-hearted man and seems as if he is isolated from everything because of too many Starkfiel winter...
