Great Gatsby Essay

Daisy is the embodiment of the American Dream to Gatsby because she is beautiful, rich, and popular. (75) In truth she is an unhappy housewife who’s husband cheats on her frequently, including immediately after their wedding. She is a multi-faceted character who helps brings a great deal of intrigue to the story. Daisy’s role begins as that of a shallow, vain, ‘airhead’ type of character. She appears to be a bored, rich, housewife, who is aware that her husband has a mistress, but does not know what to do about it. She acts, as if basically, her marriage is all for show. She tolerates the mistress, Myrtle, and overlooks when Myrtle calls their home during the day, when Nick is visiting; she speaks with “tense gaiety” (16) in an effort to hide her frustration and anger at Tom. Another way that Gatsby feels she eclipses the American Dream might be, because during the war, when soldiers went away, their wives, girlfriends or fiancées’, were waiting for them at home, ...
