Among the many interesting characters that Pip met along the way, was a convict named Magwitch. Pip's first encounter with Magwitch was a terrifying one. But despite this negative first impression, Magwitch would have an effect on Pip that would change his life forever. Orphaned as an infant, Pip never knew his parents other than what he could ascertain by reading their headstones. On one visit to the graveyard Pip was acosted by Magwitch. Magwitch was described as “a fearful man, all in coarse grey , with a great iron on his legâ€. Magwitch threatened to kill Pip if he didn’t give him something to eat. Terrified, Pip went to his sister’s house to steal food for the convict. Pip returned to the graveyard with enough food to last the man a week.
