Summary
Emma Goldman, an anarchist during the 19th and 20th century, attempts to define patriotism without the use of the Oxford dictionary, majority belief, or the media’s indirect influence. Instead, her influences seem to be philosophers, such as Leo Tolstoy, and other anti-patriots, anarchists, and radicals. Emma defines patriotism as being “a lie and a superstition, which steals man of his self-respect and dignity and increases his arrogance and conceit.” Her essay, Patriotism, a Menace to Liberty, begins with lovely questions that entices the reader to think about what patriotism is, which she answers in her following paragraphs with hard hitting opinions backed by the ideas of other anti-patriot philosop...
