Golding's Lord of the Flies

William Golding's Lord of the Flies offers a compelling and conflict ridden story: psychological conflicts within individuals that are personal, conflicts between individuals and conflicts between groups of people and/or an individual and the group, in Golding's mini society. If the ultimate resolution of conflict through violence is at the heart of the story, the complexity, the variation and the tension in the relationships that Golding portrays make the novel believable to this reader. This element of believability prevents the reader from dismissing the story as a "comic book" horror, out of hand.
