What does the film illustrate about the nature/nurture controversy?
According to the linguist NorAm Chomsky, “human speech is genetically programmed ability”. Genie’s case had raised many questions whether nature or nurture is important in shaping who we are. First of all, nature is who you are. For example, we are born with genes inherited from our parents. We have certain traits such as hair color, eye color, etc. Those are genetics. Secondly, nurture is how we are affected by our environment, how we behave in front of certain person or groups or places such as at school or at a party. In this Genie’s case, she was a wild child who could neither speak nor walk nor respond to people. It was because she was isolated from the world or society. The nature and nurture are both needed in our human life.
