Setting: The story takes place at only a few different settings. A cave in the Santa Ynez Mountains near Santa Barbara is where they find pictures on the walls and find fur. This is also where the beasts live and come from. Another place is the college lab at The California institute of technology. This is were they study what they have found, out in the field, the school was founded in 1891 as a trade school and in 1944 it was brought into the university of California. . Another is Alaska here it is cold kind of dark very snowy and icey.
