The main theme this book is the theme of personal motivation. The text in chapter six explains some content theories related to the lack of motivation the people of this enlightening story were experiencing. The third floor, which was known as the “toxic energy dump, had a negative outlook on the work they did. Mary Jane, the main character of the story, sought to improve the team’s general attitude and methods of working to bring life to the third floor. Frederick Herzberg’s two-factor theory is a great illustration of the continuum for job satisfaction; having hygiene factors and motivation factors on opposites ends of the spectrum. Mary Jane’s approach to motivation was found through choosing one’s attitude, having fun at work, being present, and making people’s day. By using these four practices, Herzberg’s theory is integrated creating job satisfaction and preventing job dissatisfaction.
