is more about a woman’s place in society. If Wallace Steven had a character of a man in this poem, I would have then been more apt to say it was about religion. Indeed, religion is a big part of the poem. I think that this is a time where Paganism and Modernity are at debate. Sunday is a day in which society is supposed to worship the Lord, and above all, go to church. A day when perhaps one feels put upon by other's religiosity, and feels called to confront it in some way. We are supposed to feel guilty if we do not go to church on Sunday, and this poem allows the modern people to know that it is okay if we want to enjoy ourselves. By having a woman and the character in the poem, it allows an even better story, because now it is a “woman” not wanting to spend her Sunday in church. In this poem, the reader can see how someone’s thoughts and emotions now can be discussed. Modernism is a time where people, and most of all, women are allowed to question things around them.
