Emotional Rollercoaster

The theory on what the moral of the story is for Kate Chopin's “The Story of an Hour,” varies. For example, Peggy Skaggs states that “Chopin’s feminism certainly is a major theme” (1). She also states that, “Chopin seems to have believed that men and women alike have a great difficulty reconciling their need to live in close relationship with a mate; these conflicting needs lie at the center of her work” (2). I believe in life, we all go through emotional situations. Some gain strength form them and some do not as was the case for Mrs. Mallard. In this analysis, I will show that the numerous emotions that she went through in the last hour of her life led to her demise; beginning with the news of her husband’s death, followed by the realization of her new found freedom, and finally the loss of that freedom when she learned that her husband was not dead were too much for her to handle.
