Effects of the Great Depression in European Countries

The political and socio-economic consequences of the Great Depression in Europe were significant and far-reaching. The great Stock Market Crash of 1929 in the USA began immediately to affect many European countries, starting with America’s sudden reluctance to lend money abroad. The grave decline in international trade damaged the economies of industrial European countries, and trade and tariff barriers increased from nation to nation. These economic crises laid the perfect backdrop for massive political change in Europe, specifically Germany.
As Germany entered into the worldwide economic slump, the unfortunate fate of the Weimar Republic was sealed. The USA recalled the loans they had given Germany in the 1924 Dawes Plan, and many banks collapsed. World demand for manuf...
