Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. At a very young age of three both of Poe’s parents died. After that John and Frances Allan adopted Poe. Poe attended the University of Virginia, but later was forced to leave after refusing to pay off gambling debts. In 1827 Poe enlisted in the United States Army. Following his Army Service, Poe was admitted to the United States Military Academy, but again was forced to leave because of financial support. After this episode Poe moved to Maryland with his aunt Marie and her daughter Virginia in 1835. In 1836 Poe married his cousin Virginia who was only 12 at the time. Virginia died from tuberculosis in 1847, this worsened Poe’s addiction to alcohol and brought him to a deeper depression. Poe returned to Richmond, Virginia in 1849 looking for and editing job.
