If Shylock and Antonio had gone before a Jewish judge, the out coming of the trial would probably have been entirely different. In The Merchant Of Venice, society is lead by Christians that impose Christian laws on everyone, whether they are Christian or not. Shylock does not live a fair life because he is a Jew and Christians frown upon Jews in the city of Venice. As the play begins, Shylock is seen to be the villain and is portrayed as a cold and evil character. Shylock can easily be assumed to be the antagonist in this play.
