Doris Lessing mostly writes non-fiction stories. A Sunrise on the Veld I think falls under adventure. It is about a boy who thinks the world revolves around him. He feels he controls how the world is run. Everything he does is because he wants it to happen. He’s always doing things to prove that he controls himself and not nature. One time he stayed up for three straight days in a row, then worked the next day to prove that he controls himself. The boy feels that he is invincible and nothing will happen to him. But all this changes when he witneses a buck get eaten alive by a coloney of ants. He has a gun in his hand but he doesn't put the animal out of its misery. He knows that he shouldn't interfere because this happeneds everyday all around the bush. He knows that he can't stop this, and he can't change and control everything around him. He realizes that some this happen for a reason, not because he wants it to happen.
