Discuss the significance of the minor characters in "Journeys End".

R.C Sherriff's play "Journeys End" is the realistic story of four officers: Osborne, Trotter, Hibbert, and Raleigh and their company commander, Stanhope. They are all fighting in the trenches in World War One (1914-1918).

Although most of the play revolves around these five characters, there are several other important characters who help to show the atmosphere in the trenches.

The play begins and the first character the audience meets is Hardy. Hardy is an officer from another regiment, who was just leaving when Osborne walks in. There is subtle conflict in the first scene between Hardy and Osborne when they disagree about the commander of the company.

" Osborne: Don't be an ass. He was out here before I joined up. His experience alone makes him worth a dozen people like me.
Hardy: You know as well as I do, you ought to be in command.
Osborne: There isn't a man to touch him as a commander of men."
