In the story "Where are you going, where have you been," a fifteen year old girl named Connie was addicted to music like a person addicted to cocaine, which put her into a fantasy world. The author Joyce Carol Oates suggests that Arnold Friend was a demonic figure from hell through his appearance, supernatural behaviors, and his origin. In the story Arnold Friend's appearance and clothing gives the readers clues that he was not a mortal person. It looked like he was wearing a mask on his face. It was very pale and looked like make-up had been plastered on. His skin was pale around his eyes, like holes that were not in shadow but instead in light. His lashes were thick and black as if painted with a black tar-like material. In the story Connie mentions that, "his eyes were like chips of broken glass that caug...
