death of a salesman

The play, Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, used a narrative technique called stream of consciousness. Willy Loman, the main character, was the one who the technique relates to because he looks to the past for the answers to his problems. Throughout the play there are many instances of symbolism and themes with the main point being how a person defines success for themselves. Willy is somewhat crazy with the morals he lives by and has a hard time stepping into reality. His goals leading to success seem too far to grab and he bestows his hopes along with fears onto his family. Willy is fundamentally confused in his assessment of himself as a salesman, father, and husband.
The first instance that relates to Willy’s confusion is his career as a salesman. Willy has a big ego and tells himself and everyone else about how he is very well liked and vital in New England. Outsiders would notice the nonsense that came out of his mouth, such as Bernard and Charley, but...
