Neil is regarded as a good student within the school. He is the type of person who will follow what his father says. Neil’s father is very strict and he wants the best for him. His father has guidelines to follow, which will see Neil in an Ivy League college studying Medicine. Once Mr. Keating is hired as the new English teacher Neil seems adopt to like his unorthodox teaching methods. Mr. Keating is the type of teacher who has his own ways of teaching rather than following the curriculum books.

Neil soon had an idea of joining a local community play. He knew that his Dad would never let him go through with it so he went to Mr. Keating for advice. Mr. Keating advice was encouraging towards Neil and his acting dreams but Mr. Keating also said to go through with it only if Neil’s father will allow him to by signing a parent’s permission note.
