Creating Dreams to Hide From Reality
Whenever anyone is raped, it is an extremely traumatic experience. Often the victim will distance themselves from the rape and try not to think about anything so they can not remember what happened to them. In the novel, Stone Butch Blues, Jess, who is a very troubled individual who is constantly looking for her place in life, is raped twice, which have lead other events and emotions to occur in her life. The first time she is raped is her first sexual experience. She does not create a “happy” place to go to or even distance herself from the rape as she is curious and wants to understand exactly what is happening. In the second rape, though, she creates a dream that is a peaceful place for her to go to while this disturbing incident happens. Jess creates two more dreams, one that she has while sleeping, and the other one that she expresses to Ruth.
