Corruption of the Dream
Over the years, the American Dream has meant many things to many people, depending on their circumstances and from where they are coming. For some, it has meant freedom (religious and political) and safety from oppressors. For others it has meant the possibility of a new beginning. In addition, many have come here looking for a life-style change, others for success or fame, while many have had their visions set on power and money. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, is the epitome of man’s drive toward money and power, which, in turn, equates this to man’s self-image and self-worth. It is this delusion that money and power sets people apart and above others, that creates Gatsby’s tragedy by reflecting the corruption of the American Dream.
