Copyright Laws

As a graphic designer it is your responsibility to know copyright laws to protect yourself and your work. A copyright provides protection to people’s creations so others won’t steal their work and use it to their own benefit. There are many different types of work that are protected by copyrights. This paper will help you to understand what you can and can’t use in the world of graphic design.

It is illegal for anyone to violate copyright laws. In some cases there may also be exceptions to these laws. In many circumstances you can pay someone in royalties to use their copyrighted work. In other cases you can legally use a copyrighted item without payment. Section 107 of the 1976 Copyright Act covers many limitations and exceptions to these laws.
