Consider whether post-exercise glycogen resynthesis is enhanced when protein is combined with carbohydrate in the post-exercise meal.

It is well known that high intensity endurance type exercise is limited by muscle glycogen stores. Maximising glycogen resynthesis in the recovery period is particularly important in order to maintain performance capacity of athletes. Studies are addressing ways to enhance the rate of resynthesis as it can take more than 24hours before complete restoration of muscle glycogen occurs. CHO feedings after exercise have already shown to promote restoration of muscle glycogen stores. Research is investigating the effects of CHO-protein feedings on muscle glycogen resynthesis proposing that it will be enhanced due to an increase in insulin levels leading to increased glucose uptake by the muscle.
