Consequences of King Lear’s decisions

In Shakespeare’s King Lear, the main character, King Lear, decides to abdicate his throne. King Lear wants to retire from government and spend his old age with his daughters. Unknown to him, his decision would greatly alter his life and the lives of those around him. King Lear is a man of great power, but he stupidly surrenders all of this power to his two older ungrateful daughters as a reward for their false demonstration of love towards him. This abdication of his throne results in a chain reaction of events that send King Lear through a life-changing journey.
As the play begins King Lear begins to make mistakes that will eventually result in his downfall. He divides his kingdom and intends to give it to his daughters for telling him with how much they love him. He asks them “Which of you shall we say doth love us most?” King Lear’s two older daughters sycophantly reply with flattering answers.
