Community Profile: Hillel

In the first century there was an ancient sage who traveled from Babylonia to Palestine, his name was Hillel Hazaken. He founded a Jewish school of thought and his disciples were known as "Beit Hillel", which translates to be "House of Hillel" (www.hillel.org). On the campus of the University of Illinois in 1923, a new Jewish student organization named after the sage, Hillel, was founded. This organization provided a vast amount of opportunities for Jewish students at the University, which enabled them to expand upon their culture. The Hillel is the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, attaining 550 regional centers and facilities (www.hillel.org). With over 120 foundations of Hillel located in the United States, Canada, Israel, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and the states of the former Soviet Union, now the program can sufficiently reach it's Jewish prospects.
