This is a humorous clash of the upper and middle classes. As soon as they have something in common (smoking together) Rita suddenly brings it back down to earth that they are totally different. She talks of a poem:
“…I read it in this poem about fightin’ death”
“Ah – Dylan Thomas…”
“No Roger McGough..”
This will bring a few laughs from the audience, only those who know their liverpudlian poets. As most people know Dylan Thomas is a legend in the
English world, writing many wonderful poems. Yet Frank mistakes him for Roger McGough, a “peoples person” from Liverpool who is obviously not in the same league as Thomas. Frank makes this mistake as he is excited that Rita knows and is reading a well known poet that she can learn from and he can teach about, but he is sadly mistaken and in a big way too.
