Signs that are followed by all members of our community come out of system rules. Codes are in fact those system rules, into which signs are organized. In a few words, the emphasis on studying codes lies on the social dimension of communication.
Almost any aspect of our social life, which is conventional, or governed by rules, can be called “coded”. There are many types of codes though that we have to take under consideration. We must be able to distinguish between codes of behavior, such as the legal code, the code of manners, and signifying codes. Signifying codes are system of signs. Bernstein’s (1973) work links the language people use with their social life. He found that no signifying code could be properly divorced from the social practices of its users.
