During the first 3 months and twenty days during which Ferdinand Magellan sailed 12,000 miles through open ocean he did not encounter a single storm. Misled by this one experience he named the ocean of the Pacific. Magellan sighted the islands on March 1521 and claimed it for Spain and 1st named it “Las Islas de las Velas Latinas” (the Island of the Latin Sails), because the triangular shape of the sails used on the native canoes were similar to those used on Mediterranean vessels. Then in anger over the islanders taking property from his ship, Magellan renamed the island “Las Islas de los Ladrones” (the Island of the Thieves). Then in 1668 it was changed a 3rd time to “Las Marianas” in honor of Mariana of Austria, widow of Philip the 4th of Spain. Then after WWII and the victory of the United States over Japan for the islands it became the United States Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, also known as CNMI.
