Climatology

Design is extremely important in optimising human comfort and minimising energy use
in a house. A house that is designed to utilise the conditions of its surrounding
environment can minimise energy use, and costs, and guarantee a comfortable living
space. There are many factors that can effect the efficiency of energy use in a house.
These can vary from the topography, aspect, vegetation types to the climate. Climate
varies across the world as does housing designs to suit these climates. Australia is a very
large continent and as a result of that has a varied climate. Darwin and Hobart are two
examples of the different extremes of Australia’s climate. Darwin, located in the far
north of Australia has a hot humid climate. Hobart, the southern most city of Australia
has a cool temperate climate. Being in such different climates it is only rational that
houses would be designed differently to optimise comfort and minimise energy use.
