In the post Civil War period many tribulations prevented our country from becoming peacefully united. Although the Civil War did abolish slavery along with many other things, it also left us with tons of evils to settle such as the number of lives lost, property destroyed, and most importantly, the differences of opinion over equality rights of the newly freed slaves. Congress began reconstruction efforts to ensure equal rights to the freedman, but unfortunately many of which ended in failure.
The efforts of reconstruction focused on the question of what to do with the near four million newly freed slaves. Abraham Lincoln was the first president to take a try at reconstruction, and after his death next came Andrew Johnson. Both efforts by these men, which included abolishing slavery, and to readmit the southern states back into the United States with a loyalty oath, ended in failure.
