Free Tibet – Shangri-La – The Roof of the World – Dalai Lama
For much of the world, especially the western nations, Tibet has long had a reputation as a mysterious, magical, metaphysical land. Tibet produces images of Buddhists monks, great temples, and beautiful scenery. Monks on nation-wide tours highlight Buddhist sand paintings, music, and dance. The Dalai Lama is the author of books on the bestseller lists, major movies highlight the events of Tibet, and even the Tibetan soccer team captures our attention.
There is another Tibet that is not as romantic or magical. This is the Tibet that is still recovering from a centuries old feudal system, and has difficulty emerging into the technological age of the 21st century. This Tibet is undergoing an identity crisis, trying to decide how much of its traditional culture and lifestyle should remain, and what change ...
