At a very young age, children begin solving problems. The very first example in Children Solving Problems describes two boys playing and discusses how they work together to build a shelter. The boys are so involved in their play that they don’t even realize that they are problem solvers. To make problem solving a meaningful lesson, teachers and parents have to make it real to the students. Children actually enjoy solving problems because of their curiosity but if often turns into a boring and difficult concept once they reach elementary school.
In Children Solving Problems, Thornton discusses children’s success in problem solving through social interactions. Children learn more and develop stronger problem solving skills when working collaboratively. This is because when a child works with another child one of them will think of a point that the other has not yet thought of.
