Cheerleading

The word “sport” generates different images in people’s minds. Some people think of a field, a court, or a track. While others think of a ball or stick or even the athlete’s themselves who symbolize the best of the sports they represent such as Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods. However, not many people think of the first cheerleader, Johnny Cambell (that’s right a boy!) who started the cheerleading sensation at the University of Minnesota in 1898. In fact, not many people think of cheerleaders in terms of being athlete’s and even fewer think of cheerleading as a sport! Cheerleading, however, is much more than getting the crowds to yell cheers. As cheerleading has grown over the years, it has taken on an even more important role in America and now there is a definite sport side to it.
