Lords built castles for protection and bases for soldiers. They built it from earth and timber. The simplest castle was the ring work: It was an enclosure surrounded by a ditch with a ditch with an earth rampart inside. They had a strong timber fence (or palisade) built on top of the rampart. In the 11th century motte and bailey castles became popular. Earth mound (or motte) was built next to yard (or bailey).
