The dismal state of discipline in schools calls for the revival of the practice of using the rod. Sparing the rod and spoiling the child is not the answer to the situation.

While the arguments for and against caning continue, the crux of the matter remains – student indiscipline is a serious problem. City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dell Akbar Hyder Khan said recently that crimes involving students increased for the first eight months of this year, with 141 violent and 668 property crimes cases. He added that last month, 17 secondary schools in Kuala Lumpur were identified as “problematic schools”, facing serious disciplinary problems, like a high rate of absenteeism, hooliganism and gangsterism.
