Book Review 1984 George Orwell

I read 1984 by George Orwell. I chose this book because it had been recommended by my dad. I
found it hard to get into. The first chapters describe a grey sterile world that I couldn’t relate to
and a totally downtrodden man who hates his life. His name is Winston. He is small, a drone and
he has an ulcer on his ankle. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth. He is stationed in the
records department where he changes the details on news stories to fit the governments liking.

The book starts with Winston in his apartment thinking about how he hates the government and
his life. He writes “down with Big Brother” over and over again in an illegal book. He is very
scared about getting arrested for thought crimes against the government.

The world in 1984 now has “newspeak”, “doublethink” and “mutabilities” which are based apon
the past society.

Winston goes to sleep and dreams about his family that were separated from him by the
government. In the mornin...
