Masculinity and Femininity

“The basic discovery about any people is the discovery of the relationship

between its men and its women”(Buck). The roles of masculine and feminine play

a very important part in the novel, Washington Square, with these two roles

defining a character’s place in society. This paper will argue that men and women

have different access to education, different career possibilities, and self-

fufillment. “A set of principles permitting greater opportunity or liberty to one

than to another, especially the granting of greater sexual freedom to men than to
